In 2016, the City of Brownsville was inducted into the Texas Main Street Program by the Texas Historical Commission and as such, joined a state and national network of over 2,000 cities that are dedicated to building stronger communities by embracing what makes them unique -- their culture, heritage and history. The Texas Main Street Program is a proven and effective economic development program that acknowledges that historic preservation and community engagement is fundamental to downtown revitalization and utilizes the Main Street Four-Point Approach -- a multi-faceted strategy that focuses on four comprehensive areas of development: organization, promotion, design, and economic vitality -- as a roadmap to revitalization.
Main Street Brownsville is a city-sponsored program that is tasked with utilizing the Main Street Four-Point Approach and its practical and adaptable strategies to develop an annual action plan that will guide the City's downtown redevelopment. The annual action plan will be implemented by the Main Street Advisory Board and community volunteers.
